Stanley Ipkiss (Jim Carrey) is a shy and luckless romantic who is regularly bullied by nearly everyone around him, including his boss, his landlady, and car mechanics. His only friends are his dog Milo and his co-worker Charlie Schumacher (Richard Jeni).
One day a beautiful girl, Tina Carlyle (Cameron Diaz in her first film), walks into the bank where Stanley works as a clerk and heads straight to him for assistance.
Stanley falls in love with Tina almost immediately and to his surprise, Tina seems to like him too. What Stanley doesn’t know is that Tina has a hidden camera in her handbag and is in fact running errands for the gangster Dorian Tyrell (Peter Greene) who plans to rob the bank and overthrow his boss Niko at the same time.
Tyrell runs the exclusive Coco Bongo club where Tina is a singer/dancer and a regular guest every night. To fool Stanley into thinking she’s interested in him, she invites him to join her at the club. But after being denied entrance to the Coco 
Bongo, Stanley is stranded with a broken-down rental car at the city’s filthy harbor, where he finds a mysterious wooden mask floting in the sea.
Stanley decides to take the wooden mask home but when he puts it on, it suddenly comes alive, wraps around his head, and transforms Stanley into a wackily-suited, green-headed, cartoonish figure called “The Mask”, a trickster unbound by any limitations whether be personal inhibitions or physical laws, who cheerfully exacts revenge on some of Stanley’s tormentors (in comical goofy fashion) and terrifies a street gang that attempts to terrorize him.
