Childhood – Early Stage Trivia:

As a child, Jim stated in an interview that when he played hockey, he got the most penalty minutes in a game … and he was a goalie!

Jim has said that when he was a kid all he wanted was a mustang bike with a banana seat, but his father couldn’t afford one; he prayed hard, and two weeks later Carrey won a lime green, mustang bike with a banana seat, in a raffle he never entered.

Carrey was born and grew up in the Toronto suburb of Newmarket, Ontario to a family with some French Canadian roots (the original surname was Carré).

Jim’s father, Percy, lost his job when Jim was in the 9th grade, forcing the family to sell their house and relocate to Scarborough, where the whole family took on jobs at the Titan Wheels factory as janitorsvwvan or security guards. Jim would work an 8 hour shift directly after school, scrubbing toilets and floors. At one point, the family was so poor they all lived in their VW Camper Van.

Jim’s mother, Kathleen, suffered depression and was often chronically sick with both real and imagined illnesses. His father was a saxophone player with a big band, but sold his sax and dreams to take a job as an accountant.

Performed his first stand-up routine (with disastrous results) in a yellow suit and tails made by his mother, similar to what he would later wear in The Mask (1994).

Was a straight-A student until he dropped out for good.

When he was a child and life was difficult for his family, Jim would wear his tap shoes to bed. He did this in case his parents needed cheering up during the night.

When he was in junior high, Jim insisted on performing for his classmates. His teachers realized that the only way to calm him was to allow him a ten-minute spot at the end of each school day. christmastree

As a child, Jim loved Christmas time. Not because of the holiday season or the gifts, but because visiting relatives increased his audience. He obsessively studied television shows, perfecting impressions of the stars and his alcoholic grandfather.

At the age of ten, Jim had published a book with his poems and had sent his résumé to Carol Burnett. Nothing came of either attempt.

Carreer Trivia:

Carrey dropped out of high school at the age of 16 and began to work in comedy clubs with an act that included impersonations of celebrities such as Michael Landon and Jimmy Stewart.

At the age of 17, he moved to Los Angeles and started working in The Comedy Store, where he was noticed by comedian Rodney Dangerfield. Dangerfield liked Carrey’s act so much that he signed him up to open Dangerfield’s tour performances in Las Vegas.

rubberfaceCarrey made a forgettable film debut in Rubberface (1981). Four years later, he had a starring role in the dark comedy Once Bitten as Mark Kendall, a teen virgin who is pursued by a 400-year old vampire, played by Lauren Hutton. Carrey, however, did not experience box office success until almost a decade later when he got a starring role in the comedy Ace Ventura, Pet Detective, which premiered only months before In Living Color ended. The film was panned by the critics, and helped earn him a 1994 Golden Raspberry Award.

Auditioned for a role in Joel Schumacher’s D.C. Cab in 1983, but failed. It was not until 12 years later that he had the chance to work with this director in Batman Forever (1995).

Jim’s career started off with modest success. He was starring in a television comedy show (The Duck Factory in 1984) and two movies (Copper Mountain and All In Good Taste, both in 1983). Feeling confident in his prospects, he sent for his parents in Toronto and set them up to live in Los Angeles to be close to him. Unfortunately, things then went badly for Jim. His movies were financial failures and The Duck Factory was cancelled after thirteen shows. As his money began to run out, a depressed Jim started to paint a portrait of his father with a stopwatch in one hand and a gun in the other, calling it ‘Waiting Around to Die’. He eventually did the hardest thing he ever had to do, and sent his parents back to Toronto.

Hosted The YTV Awards Show in mid ’80s with Laurie from Fox After Breakfast (1996). YTV is Canada’s Youth Television station.

While on his way to an audition for a spot on Saturday Night Live in 1986 (alongside Dana Carvey and Phil Hartman), he spotted an employee of NBC atop the roof, threatening to jump and kill himself. The experience shook Jim up and threw his comic timing off. He failed the audition and has often told this story since.

During a time when he was down on his luck, he wrote himself a check for ten million dollars and post-dated it for Thanksgiving Day, 1995. The motivational trick seemed to work. Just three days before his father’s death, Jim was offered ten million dollars for appearing in The Mask. His father was absolutely delighted. Jim placed the original check in his father’s breast pocket before they closed the coffin.

deadpoolJim landed parts in two Buddy Van Horn films that starred Clint Eastwood; The Dead Pool in 1988 and Pink Cadillac in 1989. It was Clint Eastwood himself who asked to have Jim involved in both films because he loved the impressions Jim did of him.

Spent about two and a half hours along with his co-stars, Jeff Goldblum and Damon Wayans, to be suited up as the aliens while filming Earth Girls Are Easy (1988). Their voices were dubbed for some scenes in this film.

Dedicated Jim Carrey’s Unnatural Act (1991) to his mother, Kathleen Carrey, after her death because of kidney failure in the same year.

Director Chuck Russell has said that The Mask (1994) started off as a very dark horror film based on the old comic books before being transformed as a vehicle for Jim Carrey’s unique comedy.

He took out his cap for his chipped tooth for Dumb and Dumber.

In Dumb and Dumber the most annoying sound in the world was ad-libbed by Carrey during filming.

Jim refused to shoot an alternate ending of Harry and Lloyd in Dumb and Dumber getting on the bus with the Tropicana girls.

The nightclub he visits (in hopes of attracting Cameron Diaz) in The Mask bears the name of the Coco Bongo. Coco Bongo was also the name of the bar Peter Appleton (Carrey) went to after losing his job in The Majestic (2001).

The scene in The Mask where he is being chased by gangsters and pulls the wet condom out of his pocket and says, “Sorry, wrong pocket”, was improvised by Carrey.

After the negative experience of making Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls, Jim vowed never to do a sequel again and has kept that promise.

penisWas said to have undergone plastic surgery after he was seen on the cover of American magazine bearing a striking resemblance to Keanu Reeves. His barely-recognizable snapshot prompted suspicion of plastic surgery or very heavy airbrushing, both of which his representative Marleah Leslie denied.

He appeared at the 20th anniversary special for The Comedy Store wearing nothing but a sock on his penis.

He was originally cast as Dr. Evil in Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery (1997), but he had to drop out of the role due to a scheduling conflict with Liar Liar (1997).

Jim married his Dumb and Dumber co-star and love interest Lauren Holly on September 23, 1996 but the couple divorced on July 29, 1997, citing irreconcilable differences.

Jim’s $20 million paycheck for The Cable Guy was the highest salary paid to a comedian at the time.

During the filming of Man on the Moon, Jim suffered bad neck injuries while recreating the scene in which Kaufman gets in the ring with professional wrestler, Jerry Lawlor.

During the filming of Me, Myself & Irene (2000), Jim and the production crew attended a private music show of the band Phish on June 24th 1999 at the guitarist/vocalist house in Careystock, Vermont. There, he sang two songs with Phish, Hey You by Pink Floyd and Come Together by The Beatles.

He refused to be called by his real name during the entire production of Man on the Moon – to get into the part, he insisted on being dealt with as Andy Kaufman at all times, on and off the set.

His ex-wife, Melissa Womer, has a small part as a Comedy Store waitress in Man on the Moon. She is credited as Melissa Carrey.

The story was about a state trooper with multiple personalities who fights for a woman, Irene, played by Renee Zellweger. The movie grossed $24 million dollars on it’s opening weekend and grossed $90 million nationwide.

The arguments and dispute between Jerry Lawler and Andy Kaufmann in Man on the Moon, although portrayed as real at the time, were actually fabricated to create publicity. During the filming, there were reports that Lawler and Jim Carrey had a real fight, just as Lawler and Kaufmann were supposed to have had. However these were all made up too, as publicity for the release of the movie.

I e-mailed Universal Studios about this issue … I think I want payment.
