This film,by screenwriters/directors John Requa and Glenn Ficarra, is based on a book by Steven McVicker and tells us the story of Steven Russell who on his deathbed takes a look back at his colorful life and the events that have led him to where he is now.

We learn that Steven was once a cop, living happily in Texas with his wife (Leslie Mann), spending his free time trying to track and locate his biological mother who gave him up for an adoption.


The day comes when he finds his mother but her reaction to him (and his reaction to her reaction) changes everything and Steven decides to take on another and very different role in the world.
